A trip to the ocean

I didn't grow up near an ocean. In fact, I've only experienced it a handful of glorious times. This year we planned a trip down to Florida with the boys and I am eager to share the experience with them. In preparation for our adventure, I found these books to read:

1. The Seaside Naturalist - This is a large book with all kinds of creatures in black and white - great for reference and nature journaling

2. What Lives in a Shell? - A Let's Read Aloud Science book - Simple and clear explanation of shells, with illustrations of diverse children, which I appreciate.

3. Shells - A DK Eyewitness guide

4. Pagoo - Holling C. Holling book that I am excited to read with the boys. We read Paddle To The Sea which the boys adored (and it inspired a trip to Niagara Falls). This one is on Ambleside Online's booklist for Year 3.

5. The Burgess Seashore Book - My 8 year already read this one last week when he saw that I got it. He said it was great. Last year we read the Burgess Bird Book together but I had never heard of this one until I started researching living books about the ocean!

6. Junonia - 8 year old already read this one too - about a little girl in search of a rare junonia shell.

7. All About The Sea - I found the "All About...." science book series at an estate sale, so I had this one. It's really great. The beginning has a bit of evolutionary explanations for how the oceans/earth formed, but we have discussed these ideas with the boys and will continue to talk through creationism vs evolution and all the nuances.

8. Sea Shells of the World - Vintage Golden Book guide - Just thumbing through this makes me say: God is wonderfully creatively artistic!

9. The Sea Shore - A short picture book with beautiful illustrations

10. Strawberry Girl  - Not pictured. Lois Lenski book I'm waiting on. A historical fiction-type book about a girl moving to rural central Florida in the early 20th century. It's not about the beach or ocean, but I wanted to include it since we'll be in Florida.

11. The Sea Around Us by Rachel Carson  - This is not a book we will read before going to Florida, but I may take a peek. It's on Ambleside Online list for Year 6 and written by a marine biologist.

In addition to enjoying the water, sand, and sun, we also plan to visit a Florida state park. Whenever we travel, I like to check out the local/national parks in the area. Hiking and exploring are great ways to spend time together as a family.
