Exams
Exams at our house look like this:
Choosing the best copywork and nature notebook drawing to show Papa.
Gathering all the books we have been reading and discussing our favorite stories.
Singing a folksong and hymn together.
Narrating history and Bible.
Reciting scripture, poetry, and Shakespeare that has been memorized.
Showing off handicrafts and artist cards created during the term.
Playing a recent piano piece.
Eating a special treat and/or something special after exams as a celebration.
This term we did morning exams which took about an hour (we could have gone longer, but it was sunny and in the high 50s outside!) and then we hit the road to hike at a local state park for the rest of the day!
*The purpose of Charlotte Mason style exams is to let the student show what they know, not what they don't know. The principle to use in shaping an exam for your child is: how can they show what they know?*
Also, exams are a way for me to access my weaknesses in guiding and teaching. For example, this term exam the boys didn't know where the Santa Fe Trail was, even though we read Tree in the Trail and they narrated their way through it. I need to think about how I can better incorporate map work so they can visualize the geography.
*Ambleside Online exams: http://amblesideonline.org/ExamAOExams.shtml which I edit as needed. Right now, everything is oral, but as they get older written answers will be required.
