Living Biography Books: Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman 1822 - 1913
Living biography books for 19th century (1800s) history rotation, Ambleside Online Year 5 & 10.
Disclaimer: We have not read most of these, yet. These are books I have been collecting to read for this coming homeschool year and the next history rotation.*
What we have read:
Moses by Carole Boston Weatherford - This picture book moved me to tears as I read about Harriet's faith in God.
Underground Abductor by Nathan Hale - Both my 11 year old and 9 year old read this one and I skimmed it. Nathan Hale's graphic novel series is a hit in our house.
What we will read together this year (Y5):
Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad by Ann Petry - I have two editions of this book pictured. The older one (1955) I bought first, but when I saw that Jason Reynolds wrote the forward to the new edition, that one made its way onto our shelves too. I am eager to read this book because Ann Petry is an African American author and it is published by Crowell. It is on Reshelving Alexandria's list as well.
What I will save for Y10:
Bound For the Promised Land: Harriet Tubman by Kate Clifford Larson
Also a friend just recommended She Comes To Slay (not pictured above) by Erica Armstrong Dunbar
The only non-living book pictured above is from a series of books called Black Americans of Achievement, that will be used for resource in the upper years: Harriet Tubman Antislavery Activist by M.W. Taylor and introduction by Coretta Scott King. This series is similar to a traditional textbook with photographs and images of artifacts / manuscripts.
*I may come back and write about each book at the end of next year.
-----
I grew up only 20 minutes from Auburn, NY, so when we visited my family this summer, we made a trip to see the Harriet Tubman National Park (her house, home for the elderly, and her grave). It was very special, even though her house and home for the elderly wasn't open due to renovations. You can read more here: www.harriettubmanhome.com and www.harriet-tubman.org/house
